Coach Griffin
Coach Griffin has been participating in OotM since 1994, for a total of 12
years. This includes the 3 years at Haviland High and Junior High.
He has attended World Finals a total of 8 times and has had 18 teams go to World
during his 12 year run. Haviland has a highly experienced coach for this
event and we are all excited to see what will happen this year. This will
be the 3rd year that Haviland will be participating and has sent teams to World
the 2 previous times. This years teams have high expectations and hopes
for the best.
Mr. Griffin is also a highly experienced teacher of 19 years. He
teaches industrial arts for Haviland High School and participates around the
community with construction assignments during his construction hour.
Numerous people come in asking for all kinds of stuff like welding fences,
building railing for houses, and laying cement for the district secretary.
Problem 1:
Odyssey Road Rally
Divisions I, II, & III
This problem combines two popular activities -- Road Rallies and
Sporting Events. Teams will design, build, and operate an original
vehicle, which they will drive in a road rally that has four
checkpoints. At each checkpoint, the vehicle will compete in a
sports-related event. The team will choose three of the events from
lists in the problem and will create an original sports-related event
for the fourth checkpoint. The team will also develop a theme for its
road rally.
Cost limit: $145 USD.

Problem 2: DinoStories
Divisions I, II, III, &
IV
What might have happened to the dinosaurs that existed so many years
ago? In a humorous performance, teams will present their original theory
of what caused the dinosaurs to become extinct. The performance will
include a dinosaur, a replica of the same dinosaur, an animal that is
not a dinosaur, and a technical simulation of the team's "extinction
theory." At least part of the performance will take place in a setting
from the Triassic, Jurassic, or Cretaceous periods.
Cost limit: $145 USD.

Problem 3:
Classics ... The Wonderful Muses
Divisions I, II, III &
IV
In Greek Mythology, muses were the source of inspiration for the
creative works of artists and scientists. The team's problem is to
create and present an original performance that includes one of the nine
Greek muses. The Muse will inspire two people during the performance:
(1) a historical person who made an actual positive contribution to the
world, and (2) an original, team-created person who tries to make a
positive contribution to the world. The Muse will use the art form
attributed to her during two "moments of inspiration," when all the
characters in the scene, except the Muse, will "freeze." The team will
also create two original works in that art form to include in the
performance.
Cost limit: $125 USD.

Problem 4:
Tee Structure
Divisions I, II, III &
IV
The team's problem is to design and build a structure using only balsa
wood and glue. The team will test the structure by having it support
weights that are balanced on golf balls without touching anything else.
The team will receive score for the amount of weight the structure holds
during testing and bonus points for each golf ball used to support the
weights.
Cost limit: $140 USD.

Problem 5:
The Eccentrics!
Divisions I, II, III &
IV
This problem requires teams to create and present a humorous performance
about three Eccentric Characters that demonstrate odd behavior, peculiar
mannerisms, and unconventional dress. The performance will include a
team-created "problem" within or involving an Earth system -- the
atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, or hydrosphere. The
Eccentric Characters, which seem to be misfits, will solve the problem.
As a reward, a celebration is held in their honor and they end up
launching a new fad.
Cost limit: $125 USD.

This year, Mr. Griffin has left the teams
for open game again. Meaning, all of you peoples out there that are asking
us, "How do I get in Odyssey of the Mind?" Our answer will remain, get
together with some people that you can get along with (at least 5, maximum of 7)
and look over the problems listed above and talk with Mr. Griffin about the
problem you wish to compete in. Don't choice anyone that you don't want to
spend at least 4 hours a week with. All students involved in OoTM this
year must participate in spontaneous discussions even if they are not on the
spontaneous team. Regional's will be held at Halstead Schools this year, with
state being held at
K-State Union Building, and World Finals at the
University of Maryland.
Asst. Coach Andrea Grace will be
participating with the Spontaneous aspect of the event along with basic
management. Mrs. Cyndee Tuttle will be handling the elementary
students. She currently has two teams that are eligible for State
Competitions.
Odyssey of the Mind has started off with a good bang.
With schools like East Wichita, Andale, Halstead, St. Mark and Clearwater for
competition, Haviland really cleaned up with four 1st Place medals, one 2nd
Place medal, and one 3rd Place medal. This is a huge achievement for all
of us involved this year. We all are excited and greatly looking forward
to continuing on to the State Competition at K-State Union Complex. State
will be held on March 29, 2008 with the teams leaving during school on Friday
the 28th. All teams competing are expected to be ready by this date.
After attending the K-State University
Campus the Odyssey of the Mind teams participated in a rough competition.
With more schools from the Kansas City area and other regions such as Hays and
Liberal the competition was stiff and exciting. In the end all three high
school teams pulled out winning two 1st Place medals and 2nd all qualifying for
World Finals in Maryland. Although the Junior High team put forth a lot of
effort neither team was able to place this year.
Overall, Haviland High School took two
of the five 1st Place medals leaving a total of three for the rest of the state
to split. These were divided to Liberal, Ulysses, and Deerfield.
This is an extremely impresses effort that was accomplished as all of these
schools greatly exceed that of the enrollment of Haviland High School.
GOOD JOB GUYS!!!
Congratulations to this years Haviland
